The world’s largest producer of paper and cellulose, Asia Pulp & Paper Group (APP), has been recognized for the best “program key technological research and development of China” for the use of innovative technologies within the project for the wastewater treatment Guangxi Jingui Pulp & Paper. The award was presented by the Office of Science and Technology of the Province of Guangxi1. The program of research and development, for which APP-China will invest a total of 200 million yuan (32 million U.S. dollars), is intended to increase the effectiveness of the treatment of wastewater generated from the production of chemical and mechanical pulp- technology of high temperature oxidation. Jingui Pulp & Paper, one of the largest paper mills in APP-China has begun the production of cellulose in 2011, is the first company to develop and deploy this technology for the treatment of waste water. The process includes a system that distills the recycling of alkaline waste water and untreated waste material converts into energy. At the same time, the residues of the alkaline waste water are recycled and reused thus saving energy and a reduction in emissions. Using this innovative system, Jingui Pulp & Paper is not only able to recycle 95% of the water used in the production of chemical and mechanical pulp, but also to reuse 93% of its alkaline waste water, saving energy equivalent to 33,000 tons of standard coal each year.
In addition to the recognition from Jingui Pulp & Paper, one of the largest paper mills in APP-China, Gold East Paper has been recognized as one of the leading companies environmentally friendly and efficient in terms of energy savings in all of China together with other 79 companies. This official recognition is issued only to those firms that are known for their excellence in eco-friendly practices and only after careful inspection carried out by the Ministries of the Republic of China: Industry and Information Technology, Finance, and Science and Technology .
Finally, Jinhai Pulp & Paper mill in Hainan province is the first unit of APP-China to meet the Special Inspection for the Prevention of Pollution of the Sea. The Office of Science and Technology of Guangxi Province is an agency of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China that coordinates and regulates the activities of science and technology in the country.
